Apple iPad! It has arrived…Big Deal.

In Uncategorized on January 30, 2010 at 9:08 pm

Okay, so the iPad has “arrived”.  Well, sort of.  It hasn’t been officially released to the public, but it has been officially announced, and will be available come March 2010.  However, the version to be released will be the WiFi only edition, as the negotiations for adding 3G cell phone components are still taking place.  On top of that, the cheapest model will sell for only $499!  Honestly, that is a great deal for an Apple product that offers a 9.7” multi-touch screen, 1ghtz A4 (Apple made) processor, and 16gb’s of flash memory.

However, there are pundits that argue that it isn’t worth it because the iPad is running nothing more than a modified iPhone operating system.  There are a lot of Apple enthusiasts that were crossing fingers for a true Mac Tablet running Mac OS X.  Honestly, it makes sense why Apple went the route they did.  Want my opinion?  Here goes!

  1. Multi-touch – To make Mac OS X multi-touch operable would perhaps require entirely to much coding to give it that capability.
  2. System requirements – Obviously, Apple wants the iPad to be small, compact, yet capable and functional.  The iPhone OS has proven itself as such.
  3. 140,000+ Apps – They are all so easily accessible, and do so many things.

Virtual Desktops on Windows OS

In Virtual Environments, Windows on January 15, 2010 at 1:49 am

So, you saw your buddy with his Linux desktop and its three additional “virtual desktops”.  You get back to your Windows desktop and realize that you are stuck with that one single desktop.  Feeling a bit jealous he or she has that extra workspace to keep everything organized.  So, how do you work around this?  Multiple screens can be space consuming, and sometimes a bit expensive.  Some third party apps aren’t always reliable, and can crash your computer.  So what is a person to do when they need that extra workspace on Windows?  Desktops from Sysinternals at Microsoft’s Technet website.

This is a wonderfully useful, and free, tool that should have been including in Vista and Win7 from the get go.  However, considering the fact that it is a very small app that was developed and tested by Microsoft programmers, you can easily download it and run it without actually worrying about installing it…perfect for the work place computer that the boss doesn’t want you installing anything to!

Web Operating Systems – The future of computer interfaces?

In Internet, Virtual Environments, Web OS's on January 15, 2010 at 1:23 am

For the last few years various companies have been experimenting and deploying virtual desktops commonly referred to as Web OS’s.  These Cloud Operating Systems do not install to your computer or laptop, but open up in your browser.  They give you familiar desktop environments with everything you need to be productive.  Storage space ranges between a couple gigabytes, to almost limitless space.  So what is the point of such an environment when all its doing is “imitating” your desktop?
